why it matters after 40

You can't feel your bones getting weaker.

Through our 40s and 50s, and especially around menopause, we lose muscle and bone density at a faster rate. There is usually no pain and no warning sign, which is why so many women only think about bone health after a scan, a fall or a fracture.

Bones are living tissue that respond to the demands we place on them. Stronger Bones gives your body the right kind of challenge, progressively and safely, in a small class where your instructor knows your name and your goals.

Renee, founder of Parkside Pilates

“I don't want us just to feel stronger today. I want us to still feel strong, confident and be doing the things we love in 10, 20 or even 30 years' time.”

before you start

Stronger Bones questions.

Do I need to be fit to join Stronger Bones?

No. Classes start from where you are. Weights and springs are chosen for you and increased gradually as you get stronger, and your instructor will show you each exercise.

Is Stronger Bones suitable if I have osteopenia or osteoporosis?

Many women with low bone density benefit from supervised, progressive strength work, but it needs to be tailored. Please check with your doctor first and let us know about your diagnosis so exercises such as loaded forward bending and twisting can be adjusted.

How is this different from lifting weights at a gym?

Stronger Bones combines Pilates spring resistance with added weights in a small, supported class. The program was designed with physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, and your instructor checks your technique and progresses you safely, so you are never left working it out on your own.

How often should I come?

Australian guidelines generally suggest resistance training two to three times a week, alongside regular weight-bearing activity and balance work. Stronger Bones can be one or more of those sessions, combined with our other classes.

Can Pilates on its own improve bone density?

Research suggests bones respond best to progressive load. Pilates is excellent for strength, control and balance, which is why Stronger Bones adds weights to Pilates rather than relying on Pilates alone.
